The basic principle behind a chiller’s operation involves the transfer of heat from one medium to another. The chiller consists of four main components: an evaporator, a compressor, a condenser, and an expansion valve.

Evaporator: The evaporator is a heat exchanger that absorbs heat from the liquid that needs to be cooled. The liquid, known as the refrigerant, enters the evaporator and undergoes a phase change from a liquid to a vapor as it absorbs heat from the surrounding environment or fluid.

Compressor: The vaporized refrigerant from the evaporator is then compressed by the compressor. Compression increases the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant, converting it into a high-pressure, high-temperature gas.

Condenser: The hot, pressurized refrigerant gas then flows into the condenser, another heat exchanger. In the condenser, the refrigerant releases heat to the external environment or a cooling medium (such as air or water) as it undergoes a phase change from a gas to a liquid. This process causes the refrigerant to cool down.

Expansion Valve: The high-pressure liquid refrigerant then passes through an expansion valve, which reduces its pressure and temperature. The expansion valve controls the flow of the refrigerant into the evaporator, where the cycle begins again.

This cycle continuously repeats to remove heat from the liquid being cooled. By absorbing heat from one medium and transferring it to another, the chiller effectively cools down the desired area or substance.

Chillers can be water-cooled or air-cooled. Water-cooled chillers use water as the cooling medium in the condenser, while air-cooled chillers use ambient air to dissipate heat from the condenser. The choice between the two depends on factors such as efficiency, available resources, and specific cooling requirements.
