A chiller has four main components: an evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion device. These parts of a chiller all participate in a thermodynamic process. The evaporator in a chiller allows the device to connect to the process water system and employ mechanical refrigeration to maintain the desired temperature. The evaporator acts as a heat exchanger, allowing the refrigerant to absorb heat from the process coolant flow. The temperature of the process coolant drops when the refrigerant evaporates from a low-pressure liquid to vapour during the heat transfer.

An external medium removes the latent heat released by the refrigerant during its phase transition from vapour to liquid (air or water). A compressor, which serves several purposes, receives the refrigerant and puts it to work. The evaporator’s pressure is kept low enough to absorb heat at the right rate by first removing excess refrigerant. Second, it boosts the pressure of the departing refrigerant vapour to keep it hot enough to give off heat at the condenser. At the condenser, the refrigerant is transformed back into a liquid.
